ILM Level 3 Certificate in Leadership & Management

Programme Aims

  • To enable learners to develop a range of management skills and the ability to put them into practise in their role
  • Develop the leadership capabilities of learners enabling them to motivate and engage their teams and manage working relationships with confidence
  • Develop learner’s effectiveness and confidence within the management role

 

Structure

Delivered over a 7-month period, the 7-unit modules are accredited against the ILM level 3 Certificate in Leadership and Management.

Recruitment and Selection

Participants will understand and be able to apply a comprehensive recruitment and selection process in line with current employment legislation and internal policies and procedures.

Objectives:

By the end of the session, learners will be able to:

  • Understand how legislation and internal policies and procedures will impact upon the recruitment process of a new employee
  • Conduct a job-analysis and prepare a person specification
  • Apply a short-listing process using a decision-making model
  • Develop appropriate recruitment processes to identify the best candidate for the job
  • Prepare structured interview questions to support decision making in the recruitment process
  • Put interview skills and techniques into practice

Solving Problems and Making Decisions

To provide learners with the means to identify, investigate and proactively resolve problems that impact upon the smooth running of the work operation.

Objectives:

By the end of the session, learners will be able to:

  • Identify problems in the workplace
  • Investigate the effects and impact of problems
  • Analyse of factors that contribute to problems
  • Develop solutions to resolve problems
  • Apply decision making techniques
  • Plan the implementation of solutions
  • Plan to evaluate the success of solutions in achieving stated objectives

Planning and Implementing Change

To provide delegates with the knowledge skills and behaviours to plan, manage and implement change within their department

Objectives:

By the end of the session, learners will be able to:

  • Carry out a business analysis
  • Identify the need for changes within the business
  • Understand the different types of change and their impact
  • Plan and manage the implementation of changes to operations

Understanding Discipline

To develop knowledge and understanding of discipline in the workplace

Objectives:

By the end of the session learners will be able to:

  • Briefly describe the legal aspects of the disciplinary process
  • Identify an organisation’s employment policies and procedures that could guide the manager in dealing with disciplinary issues
  • Describe the purpose of disciplinary procedure
  • Identify the interpersonal behaviour and support skills required by a manager to monitor discipline in the workplace

 

Developing Yourself and Others

To provide delegates with the knowledge and understanding to develop self and others.

Objectives:

By the end of the session learners will be able to:

  • Understand different learning styles
  • Use simple techniques for identifying development needs
  • Identify potential barriers to learning
  • Analyse learning/development options
  • Identify support mechanisms for the development of self and others
  • Prepare development plans
  • Methods that could be used to monitor the development of self and another member of the team

 

Understanding Leadership

To provide participants with an understanding of the role of the leader and how to apply effective leadership styles and behaviours in a variety of situations.

Objectives:

By the end of the session, learners will be able to:

  • Define the different principles of leadership and management
  • Describe effective leadership traits and behaviours
  • Investigate a variety of leadership models and theories and analyse how they relate to the leadership practise within University of Sheffield
  • Identify own prevailing style of leadership and the effects it has on team members
  • Consider own strengths and development needs within the leadership role
  • Build personal development plans to improve own leadership capability

 

Understanding the Communication Process

To provide learners with the underpinning knowledge relating to how communication takes place in the workplace, to enable them to improve the flow of communication and to adapt their style of communication to build better working relationships.

Objectives:

By the end of the session, learners will be able to:

  • Describe the communication process and how communication flows in the workplace
  • Identify and overcome barriers to communication
  • Understand the principles of human communication, how body language, voice tone and language can affect the outcome
  • Identify different personal styles of communication and how they impact on working relationships
  • Adapt own personal style of communication to develop rapport
  • Improve own effectiveness in communication
  • Provide constructive feedback to others

 

Assessment

Participants will work towards the achievement of an ILM level 3 Certificate in Leadership and Management through the successful completion of 7 x written unit assessments. Feedback and assessment coaching is available throughout the programme.

Delegates wishing to opt for the shorter award qualification can select 4 of the above units and sessions to attend and complete the assessment process will be covered in full during the induction process.
